Letters from Iwo Jima

Letters from Iwo Jima is the narration by one of the soldiers of the war at the Island of Iwo Jim between the Japanese and the Americans.

The movie is more about emotions of various people involved than the war and strategy. It shows a good mix of the Japanese culture of pride and discipline and strong patriotism along side the human emotions of love and companionship (among soldiers).

The sound track is pretty awesome too. Using just one tune by at appropriate timings and volume level to emphasize variety of emotions.

The Best of Youth (Italian: La meglio gioventù)

'The Best of Youth' chronicles the life of two brothers, of contrasting personalities, over a period of about 40 years. The choices they make, based on their beliefs, and the impact these decisions have on them, their families and loved ones is the underlying theme. The socio-political events happenings in and around Italy during those years and its bearings on their life is beautifully depicted.

The interplay of emotions, dissent, rage, uncertainty, love and longing by the characters is etched out aesthetically by the script and its director Marco Giordana. The acting is natural and the characters evoke strong responses from the viewers.

It is a must watch. It requires patience due to it being way too long at about 6 hours, still its worth all the time.

Lilya 4-Ever

This movie comes from Sweden, The movie goes along fast and keeps the viewer involved with its storyline. The movie besides having a strong storyline of chase of change of fates also had a subtle message about how people end up giving up on their lives before "they are ready". The message which said you can live in heaven forever but you only get to live your life for once is conveyed beautifully

City of God

City of God From Brazil is a movie which many think describe Brazil or Rio De Janeiro, I came to know about if from people when they talk about how unsafe Brazil or Rio was. Being there myself before watching it I definitely wanted to see it to understand the life in Favelas as people mentioned.

I think the movie is pretty well done and being based on a real story, the presentation which makes it so involved is amazing. In many ways is just another Gang war movie, the same kind of story that one gang kills others etc. The interesting part is the subtle mention of how life in Rio is(was?) so different between the Slums and the non slums. The mentality of the people behind violence and the circumstances which forces them. and the police's involvement in the whole process.
